The Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture on Monday, 12 August launched the Digital Schools program at the National Institute for Educational Development in Okahandja. This initiative, aimed at modernising classrooms across Namibia, introduces advanced digital tools and resources to strengthen learning and prepare students for the future. Executive Director of the Ministry, Sanet Steenkamp.

Meanwhile, speaking at the event, Minister of Education, Arts, and Culture, Anna Nghipondoka, said that the Digital School Pilot Project is made possible through the support of the United Arab Emirates Digital School and the World Food Programme (WFP).

“This project, which also extends its benefits to our neighboring nations of Angola, Zambia, Lesotho, Madagascar, and South Africa, represents a beacon of hope and progress in our shared pursuit of educational excellence,” Minister Nghipondoka said.

The pilot project will initially involve 16 schools across Namibia, with one school per region selected to participate, except for the Khomas and Hardap Regions, which will each have two schools. These schools will benefit from the introduction of digital learning environments and the enhancement of teachers’ digital skills.

Minister Nghipondoka outlined the project’s ambitious objectives, including promoting digital education, empowering students, and developing a national strategy for digital transformation in education. “Technology in education is not just a tool; it is a catalyst for making learning more interactive, engaging, and effective,” she remarked.

The Minister also announced that digital transformation is a key focus of the 2022 National Conference on Education Implementation Plan (2023-2030). As part of this commitment, the Ministry plans to roll out ICT devices to schools, fully furnish computer labs, and provide interactive touch screens and smart televisions to enhance the learning experience.

In addition to the program launch, the event celebrated the achievements of 47 teachers who completed online digital training.
