The Swapo Party convened its much-anticipated electoral college, commonly referred to as the “pot,” over the weekend. Approximately 600 delegates, including members of parliament and the party’s central committee, participated in the process to elect candidates for the upcoming National Assembly election scheduled for November.

Political Analyst Dr. Ndumba Kamwanyah weighed in on the electoral process, offering his opinion on the importance of the “pot” in shaping Swapo’s political landscape.

In other developments, Swapo Secretary-General Sophia Shaningwa announced that Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah will officially launch the party’s 2025-2030 election manifesto on 14 September 2024. The manifesto is expected to serve as a roadmap for Namibia’s development over the next five years. Nandi-Ndaitwah said that the document will focus on key policies aimed at driving socio-economic progress in the country.

The first batch of results from the Electoral College has already been released. Among those who have secured positions in the top ranks are Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila and Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) Secretary Ephraim Nekongo. Their inclusion in the “pot” solidifies their influence within the party ahead of the elections.

Public Policy Analyst Dr. Marius Kudumo shared his perspective on the selection, noting its implications for Swapo’s broader strategy in maintaining its political dominance.

The top 10 candidates on the Swapo list for the National Assembly also include Information Minister Emma Theofelus, Swapo central committee member Tobie Aupindi, and Minister of Environment and Tourism Pohamba Shifeta. These prominent figures are part of the 96 candidates who will represent Swapo in the National Assembly elections.
