LPM Youth Command demands depoliticisation of NYC

The Landless People’s Movement (LPM) Youth Command has called for depoliticising the National Youth Council (NYC).
This demand follows a protest in Windhoek on Thursday, where young people voiced their rejection of the newly appointed interim board by Minister of Sport, Youth, and National Service Agnes Tjongarero.

Speaking at the protest, Duminga Ndala stated that the NYC has failed to empower young people across Namibia.
“The NYC has not really managed to empower young people across the country. You would see that in some regions of the constituency, there is no presence or there is no impact that the NYC has done. So, this is why we are saying that institutions such as this should be depoliticised. Because the core mandate of NYC is supposed to address the class and generational struggles of young people,” said Ndala.
Accepting the young people’s petition, the Deputy Minister of Sport, Youth, and National Service, Emma Kantema, acknowledged the demands and assured that the petition would be delivered to Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila.
“And this is what we want to see from the young people. Taking up issues, raising it in a manner that is compliant to our relevant statutes. We all know that Namibia is a country that is based on the rule of law, and I am urging that we do so in compliance to that.
In order for us to build our country because it belongs to all of us. And as young people, we have a responsibility, and we have a duty to ensure that we develop, we grow, and we continue to nurture our country,” said Kantema.

Additionally, Ndala expressed hope that the new minister will refrain from interfering in the affairs of young people.
“So I think it’s very important that whichever minister takes over in the new administration, that they really don’t get involved into the daily affairs of young people and that the young people are given the autonomy to govern themselves as they see fit,” said Ndala.
