The late President Hage Geingob’s son, Mangaliso Toure Fernandez, says he misses his close connection with his father. The US-based Mangaliso told NewsonOne how he and the family have been coping a year since the late President’s passing last year. Mangaliso said he misses the regular catch-up with his father, which usually took place every September after the UN General Assembly in New York.

He also said it had become a tradition to visit his father in Namibia every March. “It was a consistency that I have that I am definitely going to miss and just having access to him, in that manner with that type of intimacy and closeness, that father and son bond, that is something I am going to miss a lot,” Mangaliso said.

He added: “I miss a lot of things, but what stands out the most would be his downtime, especially his downtime in New York after the UN General Assembly. He always had a couple of extra days.

He would stay there and, visit family and friends. And on every occasion, we would, of course, have a dinner time with each other as a family,” stated Mangaliso. Mangaliso said during this time, they would spend hours talking, and sometimes go to a jazz club, before returning to the hotel to continue talking, just the two of them. “ And so, yeah, later, his voice would get lower.

I always thought he wanted to do that intentionally so that I would make sure I would pay attention and really take in what he was saying.

And, I think I am gonna miss those the most. Those were the times that really radiated with me, And it has become a ritual almost for the last nine to ten years, I would say”.

Mangaliso said he appreciates the outreach and support he has received from many.  He added that although he has been visiting Namibia since independence, he had never felt welcome as he did last year during his father’s burial.
