Government Boosts Social Assistance As Activists React

In response to the growing demand for social support, the government has earmarked an additional N$139 million to broaden the reach of the monthly Conditional Basic Income Grant of N$600 for more urban beneficiaries. Moreover, N$117.8 million has been allocated to the Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare arm of government to ensure continued coverage of Old Age Social Grants for senior citizens. Poverty Eradication Ministry’s response prompts BIG Coalition To Proceed With Protest on August 26

Despite responses from the Poverty Eradication ministry, the Basic Income Grant Coalition says they will proceed with its nationwide protest on August 26, aimed at addressing youth unemployment and poverty. The organization says its petition handed over in June has not garnered urgent and favorable responses. 21 year-old researcher from BIG, Tjipura Tjipura, asserts that Namibia, rich in resources, is fully capable of feeding its 3 million residents.
