Following the IOC Executive Board (EB)’s approval of the discipline programme and the IOC Session decisions taken in October 2023 on Organising Committee-proposed sports and pending sports, the IOC EB, meeting this week in Paris, approved the event programme principles for the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028.

30 November 2023 – The principles framework has been proposed by the IOC Olympic Programme Commission to assist and guide International Federations (IFs) in formulating proposals for their event programmes, in line with the strategic roadmap of Olympic Agenda 2020+5 and tailored to correspond with the vision and context of LA28.

The focus will continue to be on creating a compelling sports programme, while reducing its cost and complexity.

The event programme principles approved by the IOC EB for the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 are the following:

I. Athlete-focused

  • Demonstrate a high standard of fairness, safety and performance and take into consideration athletes’ input and feedback
  • Engage with the best athletes and inspire the emerging generations of athletes

II. Cost- and complexity-conscious

  • Avoid any increase to the respective sport-specific quota allocation compared to the Paris 2024 programme
  • Demonstrate a positive and sustainable impact on the Games and host, focusing on ensuring compelling and high-value sessions, while reducing the cost and complexity of operations, e.g. number of competition and training days
  • Use only existing venues and fields of play with no major adaptations

III. Gender-equal

  • Maintaining 50% female participation or increase to 50% female participation on a sport and discipline level

IV. Globally appealing

  • Connect with current and future generations, considering evolving trends and interests

The review process will take place over the course of next year in consultation with the LA28 Organising Committee and the IFs with a view to finalising the event programme after the Olympic Games Paris 2024 and no later than the first quarter of 2025.

The Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 are scheduled to take place between 14 and 30 July 2028.
