South Africa’s Trade union Solidarity condemns the appalling hostage drama at Gold One Modder East mine in Springs, Gauteng, where approximately 440 miners were reportedly held captive, assaulted and humiliated. This follows a similar incident in October that led to the dismissal of 52 miners. The latest incident stemmed from a sit-down strike objecting to the dismissals. Solidarity says white supervising managers were specifically targeted. The union demands swift action against the perpetrators. Spokesperson Paul Mardon urges resolving labour disputes through proper procedures without endangering people’s health and safety.
