On December 4th and 5th 2023, Lifecare International hosted its annual Better Together Mara Medical Camp, an impactful healthcare initiative benefitting the communities in and around the Maasai Mara. Lifecare endeavoured to enhance the community’s health and wellbeing with free medical treatment, surgeries, and medication, conducted at Sekenani Medical Centre in Narok South and Oloolaimutia in Narok West.

The 2023 edition treated 3587 patients, bringing the total number of patients treated to over 12,000. Through the support from Sponsors and Medical Partners, the team conducted various procedures that covered GP consultations, paediatrics, gynaecology, diabetes & hypertension, ENT, ECGs, optical, dental, breast cancer screenings, and more. There were 173 total surgeries, including 52 tumour removals, 56 cataracts, 65 dental extractions, and 11 hospital referrals.

The Better Together Mara Medical Camp was graced by Narok County Governor, H.E. Patrick Ole Ntutu, who commended Lifecare’s continued efforts in collaborating with sponsors and medical partners to deliver the much-needed health and wellbeing to the communities.

“The Lifecare Mara Medical Camps have gone a long way in improving health outcomes here in Narok, complementing our efforts. This is a journey that Lifecare International started five years ago, and I commit to be in every camp that they organize. Lifecare International and all the sponsors, we say thank you.” – H.E. Patrick Ole Ntutu, Narok County Governor.

Allianz Partners served as the Title Sponsor for the medical camp, whose continued support has enabled the event’s success. Lifecare’s partners in this initiative share the commitment to enabling healthcare access.

“We’re delighted to be the title sponsor for Lifecare International’s Mara Medical Camp. The main purpose of this camp is to make healthcare more accessible, something which is also central to our mission. For me personally, it’s a privilege to be at Mara Medical camp this year, to see first-hand the challenges as well as the positive impact that this annual initiative has on local lives. One notable aspect this year is the installation of a freshwater borehole. This is an important preventative measure, because a lack of access to fresh water is the root cause of many the diseases and ailments that present at camp. With Lifecare International, we want to continue to leave a lasting, positive legacy when it comes to supporting this community.” – Paula Covey, Chief Marketing Officer Health, Allianz Partners.

Other Sponsors for the camp included Bupa Global, Cigna, Kings College Hospital London Dubai, Action in

Focus, and Atua Enkop Africa. The notable industry players enabled the camp’s success, in addition to the Medical Partners: CHEPS, TAIBA, HealthX Africa, Aga Khan University Hospital, and Belarisu, who were instrumental in ensuring seamless and reliable consultations and procedures.

Thanks to the partnership with HealthX Africa, the Mara community was able to access specialised care from doctors in Nairobi, through 2 virtual clinic set-ups. The integration of innovative virtual clinics is a solution to minimizing the healthcare access gap, by leveraging modern technology.

Last year, it was realised that around 70% of ailments treated stemmed from waterborne diseases, which led to establishing clean water projects in order to address the root cause and achieve sustainable health outcomes.

“In the spirit of service, there are only partners. Bringing together notable insurance and healthcare industry players, we have witnessed the camp grow through our collective impact. We are humbled and grateful that what started off as a small CSR mission has progressed beyond our expectations in treating more than 3500 patients in 2 days, enabled through the support we have received. To our sponsors, medical partners, and volunteers – thank you and God bless.” – Alniz Popat, Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Lifecare International.

Lifecare remains committed to actively supporting improved health outcomes for underserved communities. As an insurance, health, and wellbeing advisor, Lifecare seeks to continue working with industry partners that share their vision to promote health and wellbeing.
