Transforming Lives through Safe Water Transportation in Otjiwarongo: The Hippo Roller Initiative

today8 January, 2024

Background

Ignatius Davids, a prominent figure in Otjiwarongo, has spearheaded a transformative project that is altering lives in informal settlements. Aimed at resolving the significant challenge of safe and effortless water transportation, the Hippo Roller Initiative is revolutionizing the daily lives of communities in Otjiwarongo.

In informal settlements across Otjiwarongo, alongside the issue of electricity, the arduous task of transporting water from communal taps has been a persistent struggle. The conventional method involves using heavy 20-liter paint buckets, a cumbersome task that especially affects women and children. The absence of a wheelbarrow only compounds the challenge, making it even more demanding.

Seeking to address this issue, the community of Otjiwarongo united, led by Ignatius Davids, to launch the Hippo Water Roller project. These rollers, 90-liter drums rolled on the ground, offer a more efficient solution. They can transport five times more water along the ground, reducing the physical strain by only requiring a 10-kilogram lift when filled. Each Hippo Roller serves an average household of seven, significantly easing the process of water collection and ensuring quicker and safer access to this essential resource.

However, the acquisition of these Hippo Rollers comes with a price tag of approximately N$3,500, excluding transportation and VAT. To address this, the community rallied together and managed to fundraise, acquiring about 80 Hippo Rollers for 80 households within the targeted informal settlement. This endeavor has brought about transformative changes, fostering continuous water access, spurring the development of household gardens, and notably improving health conditions.

Beyond its functional advantages, the Hippo Roller is designed to prevent potential accidents, unlike traditional paint buckets, thereby contributing significantly to enhancing livelihoods. Furthermore, its eco-friendly nature eliminates the equivalent of 180 PET bottles from the natural environment.

Analyzing the socio-economic dynamics, an overwhelming 80% of the beneficiaries were unemployed, lacked household water taps, and relied on paint buckets for water transportation. This endeavor aligns harmoniously with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6.1 and 6.2, concentrating on ensuring water access and sanitation for all.

While initial funding for the Hippo Rollers primarily originated from overseas, Davids passionately urges fellow Namibians to come forward and actively support the initiative. Collaborating and extending this noble initiative to other informal settlements could substantially alleviate the water transportation struggles faced by communities.

Davids encourages businesses, institutions, and the broader community to band together in 2024, aiming to acquire more Hippo Rollers and expand this impactful initiative. Together, the collective efforts of the community can ensure that no individual is left without access to safe and convenient water transportation. Davids welcomes collaboration and looks forward to further engagements for this cause. With unity and support, let us make a profound difference in the lives of those in need.
