The Tennessee Titans fired head coach Mike Vrabel on Tuesday in the wake of the team’s failure to reach the NFL postseason for a second straight year.

Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement that Vrabel’s dismissal was necessary to help turn the franchise into consistent championship contenders.

Vrabel, 48, was appointed head coach in January 2018 and took the team to the playoffs in 2019, where they reached the AFC Championship game before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Titans won back-to-back AFC South divisional titles in 2020 and 2021, but were unable to make progress in the postseason, losing in the wild card round in 2020 and exiting in the divisional round the following season.

The team has failed to reach the playoffs for the past two years, going 7-10 in 2022 and finishing bottom of the division this season with a 6-11 record.

“Earlier today, I spoke with Mike Vrabel and told him about my decision to make a change at head coach,” Titans chief Strunk said in a statement.

“My decision today is not only a reflection of my disappointment in our past two seasons, but also my recognition that further changes are necessary to fully achieve our vision.”

Vrabel is the third NFL head coach to be fired since the regular season drew to a close on Sunday.

The Atlanta Falcons sacked head coach Arthur Smith on Sunday after the team’s third straight losing season while the Washington Commanders jettisoned Ron Rivera on Monday.
