Angola is still Namibia’s important sister country, said Ohangwena Governor Sebastian Ndeitungu, who also urged the border regions to stay friendly with the northern neighbour.

Speaking to Nampa on Thursday, the former police chief said that Ohangwena and other border regions must maintain a good relationship with Angola.

“Angola is a very important neighbour and sister country. Not only Ohangwena should have a good relationship with Angola. The whole of Namibia, including all the bordering regions, should promote friendship and good neighbourliness with Angola. Our relationship with Angola should be closer than ever. It should be the closest friendship that promotes trade and commerce as well as political relationships,” Ndeitunga said.

He added that Angola has been a trench for the revolution in Southern Africa, which led to the liberation of Namibia and other countries in the region, including South Africa.

‘Therefore, all of us, not only Ohangwena, have to take off our hats before Angola for their assistance when we were fighting for our liberation,” he said.

The retired police chief-cum-politician was speaking ahead of a high-level visit to Ohangwena by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for International Relations and Cooperation, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, and Angolan Minister of External Relations, Ambassador Téte António, on Friday.

Ndeitunga said the joint visit to the Ohangwena Region and the Cunene Province of Angola is a working programme between the two senior ministers.

He said the meeting between the two ministers that will start in Ondjiva, southern Angola, will be concluded at the Helao Nafidi Business Expo Centre. Nandi-Ndaitwah and António will also address the issue of Namibian farmers with livestock grazing in Angola, Ndeitunga said.
Ndeitunga said the joint visit follows the goodwill visit by Nandi-Ndaitwah to Angola in October 2023, where it was resolved for the Cunene Province and Ohangwena Region to reaffirm peaceful co-existence, particularly with respect to Namibian farmers who have their cattle grazing in Angola.
