Anaesthesiologists Society of Namibia supports members’ decision on new tariffs

The Anaesthesiologists Society of Namibia (ASN) announces its full support for its members’ decision to adjust anaesthesia fees in response to the recent reduction in benefits by medical aids for in-hospital benefits for a variety of procedures.

Effective 1 January 2024, medical aids have decreased the benefit payable for in-hospital procedures by 33% over the last 12 months. This potentially will result in a co-payment of 25-33%% of the anaesthesia account for patients. In light of these changes, ASN wishes to bring the following points to the attention of the public:

1. Independence of Anaesthesia Account:
The anaesthesia account is rendered independently from the accounts issued by the surgeon and the hospital.

2. Personal Responsibility for Payment:
Patients are personally responsible for the payment of the anaesthesia account, as our anaesthesia practice currently has no contractual agreements with any medical aid.

3. Request for Quote:
Patients may request a quote for anaesthesia services before the scheduled surgery date to better understand the associated costs.

4. Time-Based Services:
Anaesthesia services are time-based, and cost estimates may be subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances and unexpected complications that may lead to a change in the duration of the procedure.

5. Submission to Medical Aid:
The anaesthesia account will be submitted to the medical aid on behalf of the patient. Once the medical aid has paid their portion, patients are expected to settle any outstanding balance within a reasonable time to be determined by the anaesthesia service provider.

The ASN acknowledges the importance of providing transparent information to patients and aims to ensure clarity regarding financial responsibilities associated with anaesthesia services. Our members are committed to upholding the highest standards of patient care and hence ASN, recognises the necessity of fair compensation for their professional services.

About the Anaesthesiologists Society of Namibia (ASN)
The ASN is a professional organization dedicated to promoting excellence in anaesthesia care, fostering education and research, and advocating for the interests of anaesthesiologists and patients in Namibia.

For and on behalf of ASN,
Dr Jesse M. Mumba, President ASN
