In an exclusive interview with Leonard Witbeen,  Mr. Leonardo Helmuth Bock, residing at the Khomasdal Stadium for the past four years, shed light on the challenges faced by the homeless community in the area.

Mr. Bock highlighted the diverse backgrounds of those living at the Khomasdal Stadium, explaining that some were previously residing under bridges or in abandoned places, while others had come from different regions seeking refuge. The lack of secure housing options and the prevalence of unsafe living conditions led them to converge at the stadium as a community.

Expressing gratitude for the government’s financial support of N$600, Mr. Bock emphasized the urgent need for shelters and a designated space for the homeless community. Safety concerns, including criminal activities by outsiders, were raised, emphasizing the need for a more secure living environment.

When asked about the ongoing campaign advocating for a monthly grant of N$1,000 for every Namibian, Mr. Bock welcomed the idea, recognizing the financial struggles faced by those without access to the existing grant. He stressed the importance of this additional support, especially for individuals lacking essential documents like birth certificates and IDs.

Regarding living conditions, Mr. Bock shared insights into daily challenges, including limited access to proper bathing facilities for women and makeshift solutions for men. While appreciative of community support, including food donations and warm clothing, he highlighted the persistent issues of inadequate shelter, leaking tents, and the harsh weather conditions.

Reflecting on government intervention, Mr. Bock mentioned previous engagements with the Constituency Office, which promised plans for land allocation to the homeless community. However, he expressed disappointment at the prolonged waiting period and emphasized the need for urgent action.

In conclusion, Mr. Bock urged Namibians to view the homeless community as part of the nation, emphasizing unity and collective efforts to address the challenges faced by those struggling with homelessness. His message extended to individuals having a tough day, encouraging them not to lose faith and to seek support from sources like religious beliefs, friends, or professional help when needed.

This interview serves as a powerful narrative, shedding light on the plight of the homeless in Khomasdal and advocating for tangible solutions to provide shelter and support for this vulnerable community.
