Recently, Steven Yarukekuree Ndorokaze  shared insights to Leonard Witbeen into the successful organization of the Ovitoto Spelling Bee competition in the Ovitoto area. The event, which took place on December 2, 2023, was a collaborative effort between approximately 14 young individuals from Oruuua group, constituting varying age groups. The initiative, supported by the constituency councillor for the Omatako constituency in the Otjozondjupa region, aimed to enhance English language skills and foster public speaking abilities among the youth.

The spelling bee featured three categories catering to participants aged 13 to 18, allowing peers to compete within their respective age groups. The criteria for participation were restricted to individuals who could demonstrate their origin from the Ovitoto area.

The competition sought not only to evaluate participants’ spelling proficiency but also to assess their confidence and eloquence in public speaking. Mr. Ndorokaze expressed satisfaction with the participants’ remarkable display of language skills, confidence, and structured communication during the event.

Cash prizes and certificates were awarded to the winners in each category, acknowledging their achievements. The organizers extended gratitude to the parents and guardians who accompanied the young participants, contributing to the overall success of the event.

Looking ahead, Steven outlined plans to expose the winners to broader platforms. In the coming months, efforts will be made to engage with other constituencies for similar Spelling Bee competitions. The goal is to create opportunities for participants to showcase their abilities on a larger scale.

The interview concluded with Ndorokaze expressing hope for a national competition in the future, envisioning Namibian youth competing internationally. The Ovitoto Spelling Bee is expected to return in December 2024, building on the success of the inaugural event and incorporating valuable feedback from the community.

The Ovitoto Spelling Bee stands as a testament to the commitment of youth empowerment and skill development, providing a platform for young individuals to excel in language proficiency and public speaking.
