In an insightful interview with Otniel Ripuree Tjombe, the driving force behind the Roots Choir project, we delve into the profound impact this initiative is making in the lives of young people in Namibia. The interview sheds light on the motivation, challenges, and future plans of this commendable endeavor.

Otniel Ripuree Tjombe, has dedicated himself to fostering a positive and productive environment for the youth through music and arts. The Roots Choir project, founded three years ago in Kuisebmund, Namibia, has become a beacon of hope for youngsters seeking an alternative to the challenges of drugs, alcohol, teenage pregnancy, and crime.

The roots of the choir are deeply embedded in the coastal community, and Otniel’s vision was to create a space where all children, regardless of their background, could come together to express themselves through choral music. In a pre-recorded interview, he shared his journey and the aspirations he has for the project.

The Roots Choir, with approximately 40 young participants, engages in rehearsals spanning four hours, during which the children not only learn about music but also receive mentorship to become better citizens. Ripuree expressed his initial challenges in attracting kids to the choir, especially those living in remote areas without transportation to join existing choirs.

The project extends beyond choral singing, encompassing various disciplines such as piano playing, guitar playing, trumpets, dancing lessons, drum and percussion, and marimba. He emphasized the holistic approach to grooming these youngsters, providing them with opportunities to explore their talents and interests. Ripuree’s ultimate goal extends to addressing unemployment by linking the choir members to potential opportunities within the Ministry of Security, Police Force, Defense, and the Navy. His plan involves teaching the kids to master their instruments up to grade three, aligning with the ministry’s requirements for participation in their musical programs.

Despite facing challenges in establishing a direct link for employment opportunities, the conductor remains resolute in his commitment to keeping the youth away from negative influences. His personal journey, having been saved by a mentor, fuels his determination to guide the youth in Walvisbay towards a brighter future.

Looking ahead to 2024, the initiator outlined the choir’s mission to push the Namibian agenda by focusing on music composed by Namibian citizens. The goal is to elevate Namibian compositions to the same level of recognition and respect as Western music. He aims to showcase the richness of Namibian musical talent and inspire others to embrace their cultural heritage.

In conclusion, Otniel Ripuree Tjombe’s Roots Choir project stands as a testament to the transformative power of music and mentorship in the lives of Namibian youth. As the project continues to evolve and make a positive impact, Buta’s dedication serves as an inspiration for communities worldwide to invest in the potential of their young generations.
