today26 January, 2024

Background

In a revelation that has stirred discontent among local artists, the Namibian Society of Composers and Authors of Music acknowledged operating for 26 years without any established operational policies. During Nascam’s open day, the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer, Albert Nicanor, voiced his dissatisfaction, citing the absence of policies and technical capacity as hindrances to fulfilling the institution’s mandate. Nicanor highlighted the impact of this operational gap on local artists, who, over the years, expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership of Nascam. The organization, responsible for collecting royalty fees for its 8,064 member artists, operates under the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Protection Act 6 of 1994.
