Limited Cancer Treatment Options in Namibia Pose Delays for State Patients

today31 January, 2024

Background

Namibia is currently equipped with only one outdated radiation machine for cancer treatment at a public health center, according to oncologist Dr. Pelagia Peggy Emvula. She raised concerns about the impact of this limitation on state patients, emphasizing that the lack of advanced technology contributes to treatment delays. In a statement Dr. Emvula highlighted the disparity between treatment facilities in the public and private sectors. Private centers, she noted, have access to more advanced equipment with higher energy levels, allowing for more efficient treatment. In contrast, the outdated machine in the public health center often results in extended treatment times, ranging from 30 to 45 minutes per patient.
