SWAPO Deputy Secretary General Disagrees with Ekandjo’s Call for Male-Reserved Presidency

Background

SWAPO’s Deputy Secretary General, Uahekua Herunga, has contested former Cabinet minister Jerry Ekandjo’s suggestion that the position of SWAPO president at the upcoming extraordinary congress should be reserved for men. Ekandjo argued for gender balance but also recommended Swapo Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s resignation if she aims to contest for the party presidency. Herunga, a beneficiary of the 50:50 gender balance Swapo policy, believes Ekandjo’s perspective lacks comprehensive consideration.
