SWAPO Secretary General Decries Succession Talks Amid Mourning for Late President Hage Geingob

today13 February, 2024

Background

SWAPO Secretary General, Sophia Shaningwa, strongly condemns party members engaging in discussions about succession plans while the party is still mourning the recent loss of President Hage Geingob. Geingob passed away a week ago in Windhoek during cancer treatment, leaving the ruling party without a president. Some members are advocating for an extraordinary congress to elect a new party president. Shaningwa labels discussions of SWAPO succession as “unsympathetic, insensitive, and regrettable” in a public , stressing that decisions about the party’s next steps will be made with due consideration.
