Shaun Gariseb shed light on the City of Windhoek’s position regarding the debt write-off for pensioners in Katutura. The clarifications come after a mass inquiry on the 7th where the City of Windhoek responded to inquiries, although a formal resolution was not provided.

During a meeting held on Tuesday, Gariseb emphasized the importance of conveying the modalities surrounding the debt write-off to the concerned pensioners. He highlighted that the City of Windhoek officials had explained the process, urging all eligible pensioners to participate in the registration process.

Gariseb outlined the registration points, including the City of Windhoek head office in town, Katutura Customer Care on Independence Avenue, and a location in Ombili. The registration and application period is set to run from February 15th to April 15th, exclusively on Thursdays to Saturdays. Gariseb acknowledged the limited timeframe and the challenge of accommodating 26,000 pensioners within the specified days.

To address this, Gariseb encouraged pensioners to make a collective effort to register on Thursdays, assuring them that committee members would accompany them to guide through the application process. He stressed the importance of understanding the application form and its implications.

Despite the positive aspect of the debt write-off, Gariseb expressed reservations about certain conditions attached to the initiative. He particularly mentioned concerns about the feasibility and practicality of the terms. Notably, Gariseb highlighted the committee’s recommendation that the pensioner write-off should be unconditional.

Gariseb also discouraged pensioners from taking out loans, especially for utility reconnections, emphasizing the need to first assess the conditions and challenges associated with the debt write-off.

In conclusion, Gariseb called on all eligible pensioners to participate in the registration process and expressed hope that the collective effort would contribute to addressing concerns and ensuring a fair and accessible debt write-off for Katutura’s elderly residents.
