Bill Goren, the deputy commissioner of Major League Rugby for the past four years, has been appointed USA Rugby chief executive officer by the national governing body’s board of directors.

The move, announced Sunday night, becomes official on March 18, giving time for a transitional period with USA Rugby chief executive Ross Young, who has spent six years in the post.

Goren handled marketing and business operations for the US rugby union series, which launches its sixth season on March 2. Before that, he had marketing and development positions in baseball, basketball and lacrosse.

His arrival comes with USA Rugby awaiting some of the world’s top competitions on home soil, including rugby sevens at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the 2031 Men’s Rugby World Cup and 2033 Women’s Rugby World Cup.

“The Olympics and upcoming Rugby World Cups in the United States hold immense potential, offering a prime opportunity to bring rugby to the forefront of American sports culture,” Goren said.

“The legacy impact these events offer on the future of our sport is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that we are ready to harness… I’m confident we can turn our aspirations for rugby growth into reality.”

USA Rugby Board chair Tom Cusack said Goren’s appointment came after a four-month process with more than 300 people interested in the job.
