Namibian Government Urges Removal of Sanctions on Zimbabwe

today8 March, 2024

Background

The Namibian Government is advocating for the unconditional lifting of all economic sanctions imposed on the Republic of Zimbabwe. The United States recently imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa and other officials, including Vice President Constantino Chiwenga. These sanctions, which restrict unofficial travel to the United States, replace a two-decade-long program against Zimbabwe. The Namibian Government, through the International Relations and Cooperation minister Peya Mushelenga, stated in a Thursday media release that it does not recognize these unilateral coercive measures without United Nations Security Council authorization.
