Haiti Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigns amid crisis

Embattled Haitian Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, has resigned following weeks of mounting pressure on him to step down. The country has been in chaos for several weeks as gangs have been attacking government structures and social order is on the brink of collapse. Henry is currently stranded in Puerto Rico after being prevented by armed gangs from returning home.

According to Al Jazeera, regional leaders of the Caribbean Community have held an emergency summit to discuss a framework for a political transition, which the United States had urged to be “expedited” as armed gangs wreaked chaos amid repeatedly postponed elections. Henry is set to be replaced by a presidential council that will have two observers and seven voting members, including representatives from several political coalitions, the business sector, civil society, and one religious leader.
