The second edition of the Windhoek Hockey Tournament (WHT) is slated for this coming weekend, with organisers promising exhilarating and competitive action from the competitors.
The three-day event that brings together first and second teams from schools across Namibia to compete in outdoor hockey at the Windhoek High School astro field will host its second edition from Thursday to Saturday.
In a statement availed to Nampa on Wednesday, the founder of the competition, Nevil Gora, was quoted as saying this year they are expecting more schools from the coastal towns of Namibia. He said the competition promises to showcase top-tier hockey talent from schools across Namibia and beyond.
“We are excited to bring back the Windhoek Hockey Tournament for its second edition. Building on the success of last year, we have expanded our reach and offerings to make this event a true celebration of field hockey across all of Namibia,” said Gora.
He added that the WHT focuses on fostering growth and development in Southern African hockey.
“The tournament features both first and second divisions, providing a platform for players of all skill levels to showcase their abilities. In a significant expansion from the previous year, more coastal schools will be joining us. The ultimate goal is to establish the WHT as an annual international event, attracting teams from schools worldwide,” he said.
He further stated that the competition provides an elite educational environment and a platform for challenging hockey, team skills, and personal development.
“The tournament aims to create highly intelligent athletes within a competitive structure. The tournament stands out by offering participants more than just a series of matches. Beyond Sports, the organisers of the WHT, are committed to providing high-level technical support from other coaching staff and creating a three-day excellent educational and professional sports environment,” Gora said.
The WHT Tournament features two age groups, which are first teams (boys and girls) and second teams (boys and girls). This inclusive structure ensures that players across all levels of skill and experience have the opportunity to participate and contribute to the success of their teams.
