The Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform minister, Calle Schlettwein, has voiced concern over the actions of the Russian company Uranium One Group. The company intends to initiate a uranium mining project near the Stampriet Aquifer but has reportedly disregarded recommendations from authorities regarding the attainment of a water permit. Schlettwein addressed queries raised by Jan van Wyk, a member of parliament from the United People’s Movement, during a recent parliamentary session. He highlighted that while drilling permits were initially issued, they were revoked due to the company’s failure to comply with specified conditions aimed at safeguarding groundwater resources.
