DA Raises Alarm Over South Africa’s Load-Shedding Transparency Concerns

today24 April, 2024

Background

The Democratic Alliance has issued a warning of a potential election scandal, citing the failure of South Africa’s Electricity Minister, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, and Eskom board chairperson Mteto Nyati to address transparency concerns regarding load-shedding. The party alleges that Eskom’s continued use of open-cycle gas turbines and the lack of clarity on diesel procurement raise suspicions of budget mismanagement. Samantha Graham-Maré of the DA emphasizes the party’s stance that any recurrence of load-shedding after the elections would constitute a scandal. She calls for a change in government to effectively tackle the challenges facing the electricity sector.
