As national elections approach, there is a concern about youth reluctance to vote despite calls for their participation. The turnout of young voters could significantly influence election outcomes and shape political priorities and policymaking. NewsOnOne interviewed several university students about the upcoming National Assembly and Presidential elections slated for 27 November this year. Students indicated they might participated in the voter registration taking place between the 3rd of June to the 1st of August this year, but were uncertain about voting.
In response to this, political analyst Wade Henckert, explained that young people often don’t vote due to a lack of understanding about the impact of elections on their living standards. In addition, Henckert stated that income and employment status also play crucial roles in political participation, especially in Namibia. He also stated that youth participation is higher in national elections than in local ones.
