The Hospitality Association of Namibia (HAN) recorded a total national average occupancy of over 58 per cent for the month of April, about seven per cent higher than last year and four per cent higher than the average occupancy for April 2019.
Its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gitta Paetzold on Tuesday in a media statement said latest statistics revealed, show a positive and encouraging development for both leisure and the business travel segment. European markets still dominate the Namibian tourism sector, with encouraging increase in statistics from other European countries.
Paetzold added that business travel seems to be returning slowly, but surely, with over 13 per cent of the accommodation registered in April, especially in the hotel segment.
“Last year business and conference travel constituted just over eight per cent only, while in 2019, business travel made up 13,5 per cent of the accommodation numbers and conferencing some 3,6 per cent,” she said.
The camping segment of the Namibian tourism industry, she said is still under-stated, despite HAN having added a special column for this category into its reporting form.
“Sustainable development is the key to success for Namibia’s tourism industry, and we as stakeholders and operators in tourism are committed to ensure that focus remains on sustainability,” the CEO noted.
