Green Hydrogen Commissioner responds to environmental assessment call

today23 May, 2024

Background

Following a call by the Namibian Chamber of Environment on the government, Germany, and the European Union to commission an independent and transparent strategic environmental assessment of the green hydrogen sector, warning that projects in the Tsau ||Khaeb National Park could harm its integrity, biodiversity, and landscape. We contacted Green Hydrogen Commissioner James Mnyupe to discuss how his office plans to address the concerns.

Mnyupe says the Environment Ministry will oversee the development of a Strategic Environmental and SocialĀ  Assessment for the entire Southern Corridor Development Initiative, which includes the //Tsau Khaeb (Sperrgebiet) National Park by adopting a consultative approach to the various development ambitions within this geographic location.

Furthermore, the SESA is expected to provide the Government with guidance from both biodiversity and socio-economic development perspectives.
