todayMay 30, 2024 30

Background

Geluk Psychology Services is a beacon of hope and healing in the heart of our community, offering a range of vital psychological support services. Recently, we had the privilege of speaking with Hina Matengu, the Marketing Manager at the organization, to discuss their impactful initiatives and the exciting events they have planned.

A Diverse Range of Services

This organization is not just your typical psychology practice. They have gone above and beyond to cater to the diverse needs of their community, ensuring that mental health support is accessible to everyone, regardless of financial constraints. Among their many services, they run a pro bono community clinic, providing free therapy sessions once a month. This initiative is scheduled for next week Friday, giving individuals who might otherwise not afford therapy a chance to receive professional mental health support.

In addition to their regular therapeutic services, Geluk Psychology Services also organizes various support groups to address specific needs within the community. These include:

  • Trauma Support Group: Meets once a month to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences.
  • Dementia Family Support Group: Provides essential support for those caring for loved ones with dementia, offering a space to share experiences and gain insights.
  • Grief Support Group: A new addition to their roster, with the next session happening tomorrow, aimed at helping individuals navigate the complex emotions associated with loss.

From June, these support groups will convene on Saturdays, while the pro bono sessions will continue on Fridays from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, led by clinical psychologist Edwina Mensah-Husselmann.

Focusing on Dementia and PTSD

Our conversation with Hina shed light on the crucial importance of their dementia support group. Many people find themselves caring for relatives with dementia without fully understanding the condition or how best to manage it. The support group offers a lifeline, providing valuable information and emotional support to caregivers.

Looking ahead, June is PTSD Awareness Month, and they’re gearing up to focus their efforts on raising awareness about trauma and PTSD. They plan to educate the public on recognizing the signs of PTSD, understanding its impact, and offering strategies for support. The highlight of their month-long campaign will be PTSD Awareness Day on June 27th. While the specific events for the day are still being finalized, it aims to engage the public in meaningful ways, encouraging them to wear teal ribbons and participate in awareness activities.

Join the Movement

For those interested in supporting the mission or participating in their events, keep an eye out for further announcements. Geluk Psychology Services is committed to making mental health support accessible and destigmatizing mental illness. Whether you’re seeking help, know someone who might benefit, or want to contribute to their cause, your involvement can make a significant difference.

Final Thoughts

As Hina eloquently put it, “As much as we would like mental health to be recognized as a basic human right, unfortunately, that is not the current reality in our country. If there’s any way, shape, or form that we can assist anyone to improve their mental health and tackle their mental illnesses to live a better life, then we’re committed to doing that.”

Geluk Psychology Services is not just a place for therapy; it is a community hub where individuals find support, understanding, and a path to better mental health. Let’s join hands in supporting Geluk and spreading the message of mental wellness far and wide.
