Burkina Faso extends military rule

Burkina Faso's military government has extended the junta rule for another five years, following the signing of a new charter after national consultations in Ouagadougou. According to the BBC, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the current ruler, will be allowed to participate in the upcoming presidential election. The military took power in a coup in 2022 and had promised elections by July 2024.

President Nangolo Mbumba has declared a state of emergency regarding the current drought, effective 22 May 2024.
