Decorated former Scotland and Liverpool defender Alan Hansen is seriously ill in hospital, the Premier League club said.

After retiring from a hugely successful playing career in 1991, the 68-year-old went on to become a well-known television pundit, notably on the BBC’s flagship Match of the Day programme.

“The thoughts and support of everyone at Liverpool FC are with our legendary former captain Alan Hansen, who is currently seriously ill in hospital,” a Liverpool statement said late Sunday.

“The club is currently in contact with Alan’s family to provide our support at this difficult time, and our thoughts, wishes and hopes are with Alan and all of the Hansen family.”

Hansen joined Liverpool from Partick Thistle in 1977 and won three European Cups, eight league titles, two FA Cups and three League Cups in 620 appearances for the Anfield side.

An elegant central defender, he won 26 caps for his country and was a member of Scotland’s 1982 World Cup side.

Match of the Day presenter and former England striker Gary Lineker wrote on X: “Horrendous news. Thoughts are with Alan, Janet and all the family.”
