Accusations have surfaced against the City of Windhoek for allegedly concealing a malfunctioning billing system for over two years, resulting in widespread billing errors. One alarming case involves a client whose water bill reportedly escalated to N$1 million within a single month. Responding to these claims, City of Windhoek spokesperson Harold Akwenye acknowledged the seriousness of the issue.

Akwenye said that the city has been addressing the matter internally. He confirmed that a comprehensive forensic investigation is currently nearing completion, with the internal audit approximately 90 percent finalised. “We are nearing the conclusion of our internal audit and forensic investigation,” Akwenye stressed. He added that only a small number of accounts are affected and hinted at the possibility of complicity among those claiming to be overcharged.

“We have identified the root causes of the issue, prompting us to bring in external forensic investigators,” Akwenye continued. He assured that strict actions will be taken against anyone found responsible for wrongdoing. The City of Windhoek aims to provide an official communication to the public once the investigation concludes.
