today2 July, 2024

Background

Two employees of the Britain-based aid agency Tearfund were tragically killed in an attack on their convoy in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the charity confirmed on Monday to Reuters. The workers had traveled from Lubero to Butembo city in conflict-ridden North Kivu province when the incident occurred on Sunday. Details of the attack were not disclosed, but the region has long been plagued by conflict involving multiple armed groups vying for control of resources. The ongoing insurgency has exacerbated a humanitarian crisis, leading to the displacement of over 2.7 million people within North Kivu province.
