The Institute of Namibian Quantity Surveyors (INQS) is currently running a campaign to educate the construction sector on the critical importance of involving quantity surveyors from the start of a project. This initiative draws attention to their role in cost management, risk mitigation, and overall project success.

INQS President Frikkie Jordaan explained the relevance of appointing a quantity surveyor at the inception stage of a project. “It is crucial to appoint a Quantity Surveyor at the inception stage of a project,” he says, “to assist the designing team in reaching a cost-effective design that suits the client’s needs.”

Quantity surveyors provide a neutral perspective on projects, offering alternative solutions and identifying any elements that might be missing from the original design. “The Quantity Surveyor looks at a project from a neutral point of view to provide alternative solutions and identifies elements which could be missing in the original design,” Jordaan explains.

Furthermore, quantity surveyors play a pivotal role in navigating economic factors and price fluctuations. They suggest materials that are readily available to the client at market-related costs, ensuring the project remains within budget. “Due to economic factors and price fluctuations, the Quantity Surveyor can also assist in suggesting materials which are readily available to the client at market-related costs,” Jordaan adds.

Through this campaign, the INQS aims to enhance the understanding and appreciation of the valuable contributions quantity surveyors make to the construction industry, ultimately promoting more successful and cost-effective projects.
