Windhoek, July 8, 2024 – The Namibian Meteorological Service has issued a severe weather warning for the southern and central regions of the country. Speaking early this morning, meteorological official Odilo Kgobetsi highlighted the impending adverse weather conditions expected to affect various parts of Namibia over the next few days.
Two frontal systems are moving in from the Western Cape, with the first already affecting the area and a second system anticipated to arrive tomorrow. These systems are expected to bring showers to the Western Cape, Northern Cape, and the southern part of Namibia. Early reports from Oranjemund have already confirmed rain in the area, while strong winds have been recorded in Karasburg, with speeds ranging from 20 to 40 knots.
Residents of the southern regions, particularly in the //Karas region, are advised to prepare for a significant drop in temperatures. Kgobetsi emphasized that temperatures will decrease dramatically, reaching lows that could result in frost, especially overnight. The cold front will also impact the Khomas and Omaheke regions, with expected morning temperatures dropping below zero degrees Celsius.
Small stock farmers and nurseries are urged to take necessary precautions against the cold and frost, which could severely impact agriculture in these regions. Daytime temperatures in the southern parts are expected to remain below 15 degrees Celsius, with some areas experiencing temperatures as low as 10 degrees Celsius. In the central parts, daytime temperatures will range between 16 to 18 degrees Celsius, while further east, temperatures may reach up to 20 degrees Celsius.
The northern parts of Namibia will experience more favorable weather conditions, with sunny skies and mild to warm temperatures. However, the western regions will see some cloudiness and cold conditions in the early mornings, with temperatures around zero degrees Celsius.
While a slight warming trend is expected by Tuesday, the //Karas region and surrounding areas will continue to experience very cold temperatures. Morning lows will be particularly harsh, with temperatures falling below two degrees Celsius in some areas.
Kgobetsi advises all residents, particularly those in the affected southern and central regions, to take necessary precautions against the cold weather. Farmers are especially encouraged to protect their livestock and crops from the impending frost.
Stay tuned to the Namibian Meteorological Service for further updates and advisories as the weather conditions develop.
