NEFF hires top South African lawyer to fight deregistration

The Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF) has taken decisive legal action against the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), challenging the commission’s decision to deregister the party. NEFF Member of Parliament and Deputy Leader Kalimbo Iipumbu said the party has enlisted the expertise of prominent South African lawyer Tembeka Ngcukaitobi to argue their case in the High Court of Namibia.

Iipumbu stressed that their action is not merely a battle between NEFF and the ECN but a critical concern for all Namibian citizens. He underscored the fundamental rights enshrined in the Namibian constitution, including the right to participate in political activities and form political parties, which he believes are being jeopardized by the ECN’s actions.

Iipumbu expressed concern over what he perceives as attempts to marginalise certain political entities unfairly, stressing that NEFF has complied with all regulatory requirements and submitted their financial records transparently. He criticized what he described as undue influence within the ECN, suggesting that political motivations might be at play in the deregistration process.

“We are setting a precedent with this legal challenge,” Iipumbu asserted. “The deregistration of a political party cannot be arbitrary and must adhere to legal standards. We have confidence in our legal team and trust that justice will prevail.”

NEFF’s legal filing aims to reverse the ECN’s decision, arguing that it undermines democratic principles and constitutional rights. They are prepared to vigorously defend their position in court, citing what they perceive as irrational decision-making by the ECN. The case is expected to spark significant legal debate and scrutiny over electoral practices in Namibia.

“We are ready to defend the integrity of our party and the rights of all Namibian citizens to participate in our democratic process,” concluded Iipumbu.
