Former Fisheries Minister Bernhardt Esau Gains Access to Frozen Assets for Legal Fees

Background

Former Fisheries Minister, Bernhardt Esau has won a High Court ruling allowing access to his frozen assets for legal fees. Judge Beatrix de Jager ruled that Esau can access over 1.2 million for current legal expenses and close to 2.1 million for future expenses, after tax. Esau, arrested in November 2019 with several others for allegedly receiving bribes from Icelandic company Samherji, will have the funds transferred to his legal practitioners, Metcalfe Beukes Attorneys.
