Namibia has been encouraged to consider a strategic shift for its National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NamCor) to establish itself as a leader in the burgeoning green hydrogen sector. Following a recent study tour to Belgium, a delegation of ten government officials recommended that the country’s oil company transition to include green hydrogen production.

NamCor spokesperson Paulo Coelho expressed the company’s enthusiasm about remaining at the forefront of the emerging green hydrogen industry. “We recognise the significant potential of green hydrogen to transform the entire energy landscape,” he said, stressing that NamCor is seeking top expertise and focusing on sustainable industry growth.

NamCor’s commitment includes collaborating with international partners, engaging in comprehensive training programs, and leveraging its extensive experience in managing existing infrastructure and energy projects. Coelho noted, “We believe that fossil fuels and sustainable fuels can coexist, helping each other grow to achieve a balanced energy transition and transform Namibia’s socio-economic landscape.”

The delegation’s Green Hydrogen program report highlights NamCor’s potential to emulate the success of Hydrom, a leading hydrogen company in Oman. “As Namibia moves towards sustainable energy solutions, there is a strategic opportunity for NamCor to be a key player in the nation’s hydrogen economy,” the report stated.

It emphasizes NamCor’s capacity to develop and manage critical infrastructure such as pipelines and storage facilities, drawing on its experience in petroleum supply management. A feasibility study has been recommended to explore NamCor’s expanded role in the green hydrogen sector, underscoring the company’s unique position for this transition.

According to the report, “Based on our initial assessment, NamCor, with its expertise and existing infrastructure, can replicate Hydrom’s success by developing and managing essential infrastructure. NamCor’s current operations in oil, gas, and minerals provide a solid foundation for transitioning into hydrogen management.”

With this strategic shift, Namibia aims to enhance its role in the global green hydrogen market, aligning with sustainable energy initiatives and fostering economic growth.
