Business and economics researcher Josef K. Sheehama recently shared his insights on Ursula von der Leyen’s re-election as President of the European Commission. Sheehama believes that von der Leyen’s continued leadership will be advantageous for both European and Namibian interests, particularly in the context of ongoing strategic partnerships and investments.

Expanding European Defense Initiatives

Sheehama highlighted that von der Leyen’s re-election comes at a critical time when European defense strategies are under intense scrutiny due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. One of her key focuses will be on enhancing European defense capabilities to address these geopolitical threats. This initiative aligns with broader European goals of strengthening security and stability in the region.

Strategic Partnership with Namibia

Another significant area of focus is the EU’s strategic partnership with African nations, including Namibia. Sheehama emphasized the importance of the agreement set to expire on December 20, 2025, which has seen the European Union commit to substantial investments in Namibia. The EU has pledged €20 billion towards raw materials and green hydrogen projects, promising significant benefits for Namibia’s economy.

Namibia’s role as a key trade partner for the EU was also underscored. Between 2019 and 2020, Namibia exported approximately €20 billion worth of goods, including agricultural products, fish, and mining commodities to Europe. This trade relationship is vital for Namibia, making the EU an essential economic partner.

Broader EU Relationships

Sheehama also pointed out that Namibia’s engagement extends beyond the EU to include its participation in agreements with other entities, such as the Saudi state. This broader network of relationships further enhances Namibia’s strategic position in global trade and investment.

In conclusion, Sheehama is optimistic about the continued partnership under von der Leyen’s leadership. He believes that the focus on defense and investment in strategic areas will not only benefit Europe but also provide significant opportunities for Namibia’s growth and development.
