With less than two weeks until the general voter’s registration for the November 27 election ends, the Landless People’s Movement (LPM) has called for increased voter education and better inclusion of the inmate population. However, De Wet Siluka, spokesperson for the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), responded by highlighting the Commission’s efforts to address these concerns.
“We would like to acknowledge the correspondents from the Landless People’s Movement. While acknowledging their observations, we also wish to clarify that we have established registration points and deployed teams at prison facilities and police holding cells to allow inmates to register,” Siluka said.

He further explained that the ECN is assessing the situation to ensure all inmates are registered before the end of the registration period on August 1. “We are also assessing the allegations to reassure ourselves that all our inmates are indeed registered before the end of the registration process come August 1,” Siluka added.
Siluka expressed appreciation for the LPM’s collaboration and support in monitoring the registration process, and urged all stakeholders to assist in expediting the process, stating, “Our target is to register all eligible Namibians.”
As the deadline approaches, the ECN remains committed to ensuring that every eligible citizen, including inmates, has the opportunity to participate in the upcoming election.
