Electoral Commission Disputes Electoral Court Jurisdiction in NEFF Registration Case

Electoral Commission

The Electoral Commission is challenging the Electoral Court’s authority to handle a case where the Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters is contesting the ECN’s decision to cancel its registration as a political party. Senior South African lawyers Dali Mpofu and Lerato Moela, who were set to represent NEFF, did not appear in court due to visa issues, which NEFF deputy leader, Kalimbo Iipumbu criticized as “dirty tricks.” The ECN’s lawyer, Gerson Narib, argued that the case should be heard by the High Court rather than the Electoral Court, as the NEFF’s application was filed incorrectly. NEFF, which secured two National Assembly seats in the 2019 elections, seeks a court order to halt the ECN’s cancellation decision.
