today26 July, 2024

Background

The death toll from landslides in Ethiopia earlier this week has risen to 257 and may almost double, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs seen by Reuters. Heavy rains triggered the initial landslide in the Gofa Zone of southern Ethiopia on Sunday night, followed by a second landslide on Monday that engulfed rescue workers. UNOCHA reports that the death toll could rise to up to 500, based on information from local authorities.
