Bangladesh’s long-serving Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the country amidst escalating unrest. Reports indicate that Hasina has sought refuge in India as thousands of demonstrators advanced towards her official residence. Neha Poonia has more.
The situation remains fluid, with uncertainty surrounding the immediate future of Bangladesh’s leadership. The Army chief is scheduled to address the nation later today, with plans for forming an interim government. General Waker-uz-Zaman has not disclosed who will head the interim administration.
According to the BBC, since the announcement of Hasina’s resignation, widespread celebrations have erupted in the streets. However, there are also reports of violence, including looting and clashes. AFP news agency has reported at least 20 fatalities in Dhaka. Additionally, police buildings have been set on fire, and a statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hasina’s father and a key figure in Bangladesh’s independence, was vandalized.
The current unrest began last month with demonstrations against civil service hiring quotas and has evolved into a broader revolt against Hasina’s government. Since then, hundreds have been killed in confrontations with security forces. Neha Poonia has more on the developing situation.
