INTERVIEW: Lüderitz Mayor Calls for Support for Local Star Athlete Liezel Munyaza

Lüderitz Mayor Philipus Balhao is rallying the community and the nation to support Liezel Munyaza, a rising star in athletics from Angra Pequena High School. Liezel, who excels in the 100m, 200m, and long jump events, has earned the opportunity to compete internationally in Bahrain. However, she needs financial and material assistance to cover the estimated N$100,000 required for her trip, including equipment, apparel, and flight tickets.

Liezel Munyaza has showcased her exceptional talent in various local competitions, demonstrating impressive skills in both track and field events. Her qualification for this international event is a significant milestone, but the costs involved are a substantial hurdle.

Mayor Balhao, who is spearheading the fundraising efforts, acknowledged the challenge, stating, “Liezel approached the mayoral office for support, but our funds are currently depleted. We are working to raise the necessary funds, and I believe if we can spread the word, the people of Namibia will step up to help.”

He emphasized that contributions can be in various forms, not just monetary. In-kind donations, such as athletic gear and apparel, are also highly valued.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Liezel,” Mayor Balhao noted. “With the Olympics currently capturing the nation’s attention, there’s a lot of excitement around sports and athletics. Liezel could very well be our next Mboma or Masilingi.”

Mayor Balhao hopes that raising awareness will lead to the necessary support for Liezel to represent Namibia on the global stage. He has also shared a letter from Liezel’s school, outlining her needs and aspirations.

“I believe Liezel would be thrilled with any form of support we can offer,” said Mayor Balhao. “Let’s unite as a community and a nation to back our young athletes.”
