Windhoek, Namibia – In a recent interview with Future Media’s Leonard Witbeen, Penda Negonga of the Namibia Progressive Party (NPP) outlined his party’s strategies for tackling some of Namibia’s most pressing issues: unemployment, housing, and LGBTQIA+ rights. As Namibia heads towards its national elections later this year, these topics are expected to be pivotal in shaping the country’s future.

Addressing Unemployment

Negonga emphasized the NPP’s commitment to tackling Namibia’s soaring unemployment rate, particularly among the youth. He outlined a comprehensive plan that includes developing an economic city between Okahandja and Otjiwarongo, aimed at fostering industrial growth and job creation. This city is envisioned to host various factories and processing plants, including those for copper, zinc, steel, and garments.

In addition to industrial development, the NPP plans to allocate substantial funds to regional governors to create permanent jobs in both urban and rural areas. Negonga stressed that economic growth is key, rather than merely declaring unemployment a national crisis. He criticized the current government’s approach, arguing that while the economy has seen some growth, it has not translated into sufficient job opportunities.

Tackling the Housing Deficit

On the housing front, Negonga highlighted the party’s goal to construct 220,000 houses over the next decade. He acknowledged the critical role that housing plays in wealth creation and personal security, referring to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to underline the importance of shelter in human development. The NPP plans to build both apartments and freestanding houses, with a focus on complementing the efforts of the private sector to address the current backlog and waiting lists.

LGBTQIA+ Rights and Referendum Plans

Regarding LGBTQIA+ rights, Negonga revealed the party’s approach to addressing this contentious issue. The NPP intends to hold a national referendum in 2027 to gauge public opinion on LGBTQIA+ rights legislation. This approach is aimed at ensuring that the decision reflects the will of the people, rather than being imposed by a political elite. The party will also sponsor public debates to facilitate a thorough discussion on the subject.

In conclusion, Penda Negonga’s interview provides a clear view of the Namibia Progressive Party’s plans for economic development, housing, and social issues. With a focus on industrialization, comprehensive housing solutions, and democratic processes in addressing LGBTQIA+ rights, the NPP’s platform is positioned as a robust alternative in the upcoming elections.
