Government demands UN action after Gaza tragedy

Background

The government has condemned the recent Israeli attack on Al-Tabin School in Gaza, which resulted in the deaths of over 100 civilians. The school had been serving as a refuge for displaced Palestinians. In an official statement, the government criticised the international community for its failure to protect Palestinian civilians and called on the United Nations Security Council to take immediate action to end the aggression and ensure the protection of civilians in Gaza. The Executive Director of the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, Penda Naanda, reiterated the government’s position.

In a related development, Hamas has expressed uncertainty about participating in the upcoming ceasefire talks scheduled for Thursday. The group said that any new negotiations should be based on previous agreements rather than initiating fresh discussions. Hamas’s position has been influenced by the recent Israeli strike that claimed over 100 lives on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany have issued a joint statement urging for an immediate resumption of Gaza ceasefire talks. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, President Emmanuel Macron, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the need to avoid further delays and warned Iran and its allies against actions that could escalate regional tensions.
