NamPol Investigates Nearly N$1 Million Internet Fraud in Gobabis

Background

The Namibian Police Force in Gobabis, Omaheke Region, is investigating a fraud and theft case after a man lost nearly N$1 million to internet fraud on Friday. The victim received a text message from an unknown number claiming he had purchased bitcoin. The suspect then called the victim, pretending to be a Bank Windhoek fraud official, and claimed the victim’s account was under suspicion. During the call, the suspect convinced the victim to provide his online banking credentials, which were linked to his mother’s account. Nearly N$975,900 was then transferred from the account through multiple transactions. No arrests have been made yet.
