Authorities have taken former Adiala Jail deputy superintendent Muhammad Akram into custody on charges of abuse of power and providing undue assistance to former Prime Minister Imran Khan during his imprisonment. Akram, who was removed from his position on June 20, is accused of acting as a communication link between Khan and his aides. Hira Mustafa has more.
According to The News International, the arrest of Akram has led to the dismantling of a broader network. In the wake of his detention, security agencies have begun questioning two additional officers: Adiala Jail assistant Nazim and ex-deputy superintendent Zafar. Their accommodations were reportedly located near Akram’s residence.
Sources indicate that six more jail officials, including three wardens, two head wardens, and another two staff members closely associated with Akram, will also be interrogated based on revelations from Akram’s interrogation. It is alleged that these officials were involved in providing Khan with a mobile phone during his custody.
The Inspector General of Prisons has been informed of the situation and has already removed the implicated officials from their positions. Security agencies continue to investigate the matter, with departmental action pending the outcome of the probe.
