A major tropical storm has knocked out power for nearly half of Puerto Rico’s population, as Hurricane Ernesto barrels through the Caribbean. The US territory was pummelled with torrential rain and strong winds overnight, causing flooding and fears for the safety of the island’s 3.2 million people, 40% of whom live under the poverty line.
